DIY Cutting Board Conditioner
INSPIRATION:
We started out buying Cutting Board Conditioner to use on the boards we made for clients, but soon realized that it was much easier to just make it ourselves than it was to drive to the store and buy some. Seriously. It’s really that easy. If you can make cream of tomato soup, you can make this board conditioner. I promise.
So let’s just dive right into it, shall we:
Materials:
½ cup Beeswax - I get my beeswax from the local hippy shop, but you can order it on amazon too, just be sure to get the small pellets… they melt much faster and are easier to measure.
500 mL food grade mineral oil - You can find food grade mineral oil in your favourite pharmacy.
Step one: Place beeswax and mineral oil in a glass jar and then place glass jar into a small pot of water. The deeper the water, the faster the process will be.
Step two: Stir often with a wooden spoon, or in a pinch, a wooden dowel will do.
Step three: Since we give a complimentary sampler of board conditioner with each cutting board we sell, we pour a portion of the melted conditioner into little sample size container. The other half we let harden in the glass jar and use it for either the boards we sell or our own personal use.
Step four: Relax and enjoy. It really is that simple.
If you are thinking about making your own cutting board, this video has some great techniques that Kris used while making some Christmas presents for a client. These boards are perhaps my favourite yet. And yes, that is how you spell favourite. We are Canadian after all, eh?
